Italian Serie A Review: Nov 25, 2011
The Italian Serie A is one of the most hotly contested leagues in Europe but there is a surprise team on top of the heap. The Juventus Football Club, the Zebras lead the league but it is a tedious lead at this point. make sure to check out the latest soccer betting lines at your favorite online sportsbook prior to placing any bets.
There is a crowd of talented teams at the top including old favorites Associazione Calcio Milan, known to everyone as the A.C. Milan Red Blacks. This year only three teams will make the Champions League which begs the question: Who will make it beside these two teams.
A.C. Milan is still considered the favorite among the experts but Juventus is in prime position to make it out of the league and qualify for the Champions League.
Aside from the top two contenders who is the best bet to make it as the third team to move on from Italian Serie A? Società Sportiva Lazio, commonly known as the Lazio Eagles, holds strong in second but can they keep it up? They share Stadio Olympico in Rome with Associazione Sportiva Roma known as La Maggica or A.S. Roma.
Many expect Lazio to fall off before the season gets down to the nitty-gritty. Who will take their place as the third representative in the Champions League?
Another team to watch is Udinese, the Little Zebras, led by Antonio Di Natale with eight goals. Di Natale can take over a game and he is the type of player who can turn a game on a dime. He will be a huge asset down the stretch.
Iran Bids for FIFA Club World CUP
To host FIFA Club World Cup in 2013 and 2014, the Islamic Republic of Iran is among four countries that have bid. FIFA declared that the other countries who seek to host the event are Morocco, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
According to FIFA regulations, by September 30, the countries must submit their official bid documents and FIFA’s executive committee will then choose the host in October.
The only Iranian club is Sepahan, which has played in the games so far. In the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup, the Iranian team played two matches, when it overwhelmed the New Zealander club, Waitakere United, 3-1 in the play-off. The same result in the quarterfinals, the team was downed against the Japanese side, Urawa Red Diamonds.
The past two editions of the event in Abu Dhabi were hosted by UAE and Japan is scheduled to host the competitions in 2011 and 2012. The champion clubs of all six continental confederations of FIFA plus the host country’s champion are brought together by the FIFA Club World Cup competition.
In early March, Soccer tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia first erupted when at Jeddah airport, Saudi immigration authorities demanded Persepolis team be fingerprinted and iris scanned. The team was there for an Asian championship match against Al Ittihad. The Persepolis team was held at the airport for eight hours, as it had refused what is standard procedure for all visitors to the kingdom.
Los Angeles Galaxy, New York Red Bulls clash in MLS action
The Major League Soccer game between the New York Red Bulls and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday will be an electrifying one for several reasons. A clash between New York and Los Angeles always brings out a unique atmosphere in any sport. More specifically, this weekend’s game will involve two of the best teams in the MLS.
The Galaxy are a +110 home favorite, New York is a +300 road underdog, and a Draw is at +240 in Soccer Betting Odds.
The Red Bulls currently have the best record in the Eastern Conference while the Galaxy dominate the standings in the Western Conference. It is also worth mentioning that Los Angeles has held the number one spot in the league table for most of the season so far.
On Saturday evening, a packed Home Depot Center will be an intimidating venue for the Red Bulls. However, New York will arrive in Los Angeles with a tremendous amount of confidence and momentum gained from the last three games. The Red Bulls overpowered the Earthquakes 3-0, then took out D.C. United 4-0, and enjoyed a solid 1-0 victory over Kansas City.
It was in those games that Thierry Henry finally scored for New York for the first time this season. Newcomer Englishman Luke Rodgers has surprised many fans by scoring three goals this season. New York’s other star player, Rafael Marquez, has been doing his job in the back end of the pitch and has recently created goal scoring opportunities for his teammates as well.
This game will be particularly dramatic for Los Angeles striker Juan Pablo Angel, who will play against his former New York teammates with whom he built strong bonds. Having only 1 goal in eight games with Los Angeles this season, Angel has yet to enjoy similar success that he’d had when wearing a Red Bull Jersey.
However, David Beckham and Landon Donovan will be providing the usual threats against New York. Also, after avoiding losses in April, the Galaxy’s recent loss to Dallas may be an unpleasant blow to the team’s morale.
Chelsea – Big Threat to Manchester United
Premier League title race is hotting up and psychological blows can be struck with the contenders all playing at different times this weekend.
For the Premier League title, Petr Cech has warned Manchester United that Chelsea will fight them until the bitter end. The Blues have moved into second spot with the gap between them and United narrowing to just six points, with just five games to go in this year’s Premiership campaign.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are the Premier League’s form team and they will host struggling West Ham on Saturday after winning five and drawing one of their last six matches. Just in time for the season finale, that run has catapulted them back into the title race. Cech is convinced second placed Chelsea is capable of catching Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, although United remain favorites to win the sprint to the finish line.
At Newcastle on Tuesday, leaders United dropped two points in a 0-0 draw. They will now entertain Everton on Saturday. Against Manchester City, they had crashed out of the FA Cup and have a Champions League semi-final first-leg against Schalke next week.
In recent weeks, Arsenal has fared even worse with five draws from their last six matches leaving them in third place. They will be travelling to Bolton on Sunday.
However, as nerves begin to take hold, points dropped at this stage of the season have a greater effect on a team’s confidence than mid-season.
What becomes more important is the order that games is played. this weekend, Manchester United is up first and a win over Everton can put some serious pressure on Chelsea and Arsenal. If Man United drops points, then it will allow the challengers to smell blood in the water.
Internet Sportsbook have the odds for the upcoming EPL matches. These matches will decide who will become the titleholder for this season. Manchester United (1/2) vs. Everton (37/5); Chelsea (1/4) vs. West Ham (31/2) and Bolton (4) vs. Arsenal (4/5). Take your guess!!
Chelsea Faces Stoke in English Premier League
Chelsea is currently eyeing to get, as close to the English Premier League title as possible and therefore it needs all three points from their tour to Stoke City.
The reigning champions’ awful run of form mid-season appeared to have cost them seriously and now they are trying hard for any opportunity of defending their crown. The West London club is in with a slim hope after three consecutive wins in the league, including a 2-1 victory over leaders Manchester United.
Having played one match fewer, Chelsea is nine points following United and still has a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson’s team to come at Old Trafford in May. On the points table, Stoke for the time being are 10th. They should not find themselves in danger of demotion, with 37 points and eight matches left to play.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis says that his team can get help in securing their ¬Premier League future as the FA Cup fever ¬enthralling the city.
Since October 1995, Stoke have not beaten Chelsea when they won 1-0 in a League Cup tie. In all contests, they went on to lose the next seven. In the league 36 years ago, they had last beat Chelsea, in April 1975 in the old First Division at their old Victoria Ground. Terry Conroy scored twice and Jimmy Greenhoff added another on that occasion.
This season, Stoke’s have a pitiable record against London clubs, as they have lost six and drawn one in seven games in opposition to capital teams.
In the Premier League, Chelsea have conceded 24 goals, which is the least when compared to other teams, while at the same time they have kept 13 clean sheets, the identical best in the division with Manchester City. Chelsea, on their tours this season has 22 points, while only Arsenal is just in front of them with 26 points.
The English Premier League has fascinated some interesting betting odds for the upcoming match between Chelsea and Stoke City. The best bet for the former team to win is 8/11, while the latter are at 24/5.
Barcelona vs. Arsenal – UEFA Champions League
In the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, Lionel Messi-motivated FC Barcelona made sure that his side wins a spectacular 3-1 victory over premier English football club, Arsenal.
The home crowd of 98,000 odd was hushed in the 18th minute. It was something that was entirely against the run of play, when Nicklas Bendtner gave the visitors a surprising lead. However, the lead just lasted for two minutes as Lionel Messi blasted a shot right in between the legs of Silvestre and Thomas Vermaelen. The shot found the top corner of the net and Manuel Almunia had no opportunity in stopping it.
The second goal came from Barcelona after 15 minutes of scoring the first goal. Arsenal looked like they were not able to handle the pressure from Barcelona. Xavi scored one by making use of his dribbling tactics, overpowering Arsenal’s defense.
The Gunners were astounded by a red card for Robin van Persie. After few minutes, Koscielny brought down Pedro, which resulted in a penalty. The penalty shot was taken by Messi and he scored his third goal thereby confirming Barcelona’s triumph against Arsenal with a 4-3 aggregate.
While the loss was frustrating for Arsene Wenger, he said that his side was beaten by “the best side in Europe”. Josep Guardiola commended his side’s dominant display. Guardiola said that his side played an incredible game. He added that his side created many opportunities themselves and they never permitted Arsenal to string more than three passes together.
In the run up to this match, Arsenal was wrecked by injuries and realistically they were missing maybe 5 or 6 of their first choice best eleven players. For Arsene Wenger, players like Gallas, Arshavin, van Persie, Fabregas and Song were all unavailable. The fact that Arsenal did managed to score against Barcelona without the presence of their star players is something the team can take inspiration.
Arsenal will play against West Bromwich Albion in their next EPL match. Arsenal is the hot favorite to win. The best odds for West Bromwich Albion are 4, while for Arsenal it is 4/5.

World Cup bid Controversy – FIFA’s Sepp Blatter May Come to Court
To explain FIFA‘s conduct in the 2018 World Cup bidding race, Sepp Blatter could be called to court. The Football Association has been notified by a group of English city councils of its intention to sue FIFA for the money that was spent on their applications to host cities.
The FIFA president would be a key witness, if the matter comes to court. Last month, in a circular sent to FA councilors, the then acting FA chairman, Roger Burden said that he received an approach from a possible consortium of cities. The possible consortium of cities feels there could be a legal case for them against FIFA. The case would be for recovery of some of the money that was spent in compliance with the bid specification.
To the England 2018 marketing budget, the city councils each contributed £250,000, as part of their application to host 2018 World Cup matches should England have won the right to stage the tournament. Relating to the terms of the 61-page host-city agreement, there were also wider expenses that FIFA required all bidding cities to sign up.
On the FIFA executive committee, one person not invited is Jim Boyce, former president of the Irish FA who will succeed England’s Geoff Thompson next June as the Home Nations’ representative.
Since the scandal of the Zurich World Cup vote, FIFA president Sepp Blatter will be at the IFAB meeting in his first visit to the UK. When two tarnished football politicians are given preference to a FIFA ExCo member in waiting, it hardly gives the impression the Home Nations want to improve relationships.
In another piece of news, Issa Hayatou, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has said that he will never again challenge for the presidency of FIFA. Against the present head of football’s world governing body, Hayatou fought a bitter contest in 2002. In June, Blatter is facing another election for the post.
CONCACAF Seeks an Extra Place from FIFA
At the next World Cup, CONCACAF wants FIFA to award them an extra place, giving the region four guaranteed places for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football was awarded three automatic places while a fourth team was promoted to a playoff, under the previous qualifying format used for the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
The soccer organization’s executive committee said yesterday that to increase the allotment of World Cup slots from 3 ½, the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football has earned the right. In March, a decision is expected at a meeting of the FIFA executive committee. In March 2012, the United States was awarded the Olympic men’s qualifying tournament.
Even though Brazil qualifies automatically for the finals, Conmebol wants to hold on the half berth, which means that as many as five out of the nine South American teams in qualifying could reach the finals.
CONCACAF President Jack Warner said that they believe that due to the performances of CONCACAF teams on the field and the actions of the confederation off it, CONCACAF deserves another full place at the World Cup finals. He added that to make this happen, they are all unified in their efforts.
This is an election year, and for FIFA President Sepp Blatter, Concacaf’s support is critical if he faces opposition. At the FIFA executive committee’s March meeting, a decision on the 2014 berths is expected to be made. In July, the 2014 qualifying draw will be held and the qualifying competition is expected to start in the fall.
Overview of the 1934 World Cup
There was still one champion that was able to win in 1934 World Cup. The number of teams was very different. There were 32 teams that attempted to qualify. There were only 16 teams that were able to participate in the tournament that lasted from the 27th of May to the 10th of June.
Italy hosted the game and they would start out by playing against the United States in game 1. This game was dominated by Italy. The United States were blown out by a score of 7-1. Spain, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden managed to advance to the next round of play. Italy in game two took on Spain. These teams tied 1-1 in regulation and they were forced to decide the winner by way of penalty kicks. The Italians ended up winning the match. By a score of 2-1, Austria managed to pull out the victory, according to World Cup news. By margins of one goal, Czechoslovakia and Germany also managed to overcome their opponents.
Czechoslovakia was superior, in the match between Czechoslovakia and Germany. Czechoslovakia played great team ball and managed to take home a 3-1 victory. This victory secured them a spot in the final game against the winner of the other side of the bracket.
In order to determine which team would go all the way, Italy would play Austria. In the end, the Italian defense was just too stingy. They were able to keep Austria from scoring and pulled out a 1-0 victory. Czechoslovakia and Italy would square off in the final game.
Even though Italy had surrendered just 2 goals to that point in the tournament, Czechoslovakia had been impressive. In the end Czechoslovakia did manage to put the ball into the net, but only one time. Italy managed to take home the victory with 2 goals. While hosting the cup in their nation, Italy would become the World Cup Champions. Germany would win against Austria to take 3rd place whereas Czechoslovakia would take 2nd place.
